Tim Skene
Hey Allan, a few mates and I were having a laugh over some of your DVD segments around the campfire the other night and we got to wondering. What was the first 4WD you ever worked on and what was wrong with it?
Allan
Hi Tim, I can tell you it was a Land Rover with an F-head, if you’ve ever worked on an engine with an F-head you’ve earned your money I can tell you! They’re an overhead side valve and we put new rings and bearings in it while it was in the chassis, and boy were they a pain in the neck to work on.
For instance, the conrods won’t come out up the cylinder bores because they’re too big so you have to pull them up, knock the gudgeon out, pull the rods back down and the pistons out through the top. Not so hard when you’re taking them out but putting back in again was a work of art. Never again!
